Hitpoints, levels, stats, character developments - all can be found in a casual time-waster near you. Meanwhile, the huge success of the genre has seen Role-Playing Games' mechanics being adopted into other genres. The advance in smartphone processing power and screen technology means that it's technically simple to render these vast worlds on our pocket devices. Thankfully, we can now all get the fix on our phones. And no other genre fulfills that brief quite like a good role-playing game. Because of this RPGs have thrived in the mobile space, with both Android and iOS being hot-beds of innovation for the genre. PC and console gamers have been enjoying RPGs for decades, it's one of the foundational genres for the video game medium.

I'd hoped that the 2018 release for iOS/Android would've led to a Nintendo Switch release, but alas.If you enjoy spending some quality time levelling up, evolving your character and being sucked into other fantasy worlds, then our list of the top 25 best RPGs for Android is certainly a gold mine for you! I’ve ended up buying Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, and Covenant of the Plume (and even ended up getting Indivisible, because if nothing else, I find the VP combat system to be fucking SATISFYING). I would like to own a physical copy of this game one day, because as far as I’m concerned, it’s an absolute masterpiece. It will take getting used to, but fuck, even the game manages to make menu systems seem like fun. The other part I had to get used to was how much the game demands you to know your character builds with multiple menus. It was hard to wrap my head around it at first). The only flaw I see is that some of the systems are quite obtuse (I was used to buying equipment until I realized the Divine Items is right there for me to take advantage of. Activating your Soul Crush/Purify Weird Soul (lol) is insanely satisfying: from watching Arngrim smash down demons with Final Blow, to watching Valkyrie Lenneth go from sword slashes/bow firings to suddenly impaling you with a fucking DRAGON SPEAR with Nibelung Valesti. That’s why it feels like such a refinement and an evolution of what RPGs are doing. The end result is fast and fluid gameplay that takes your mind off of the fact that it’s still a turn-based game. It’s freaking genius to put characters on face buttons to build up your combo gauge while leaving you the ability to cast your spells if need be. Also, the voice acting is quite good, and has aged pretty well I'd say. And seriously, some of the Einherjar vignettes go into far more tragic territory than I ever expected (Nanami anyone?).

The end result is a story and series of characters that feels more human than I ever could have expected. When she ultimately dies, you end up feeling sorry for how the entire event turned out, and sorry for how Jelanda was treated as disposable despite being a princess of a major kingdom. It would’ve been incredibly easy for the game to continue making you dislike her, until you realize that she was a pawn in a much larger political game within Artolia (eventually affecting Arngrim and Badrach with how badly they got baited by Lombert). For instance, in the beginning of the game, you are met with one of the most spoiled brats in gaming in Jelanda. Additionally, sprinkle in with vignettes almost as if it were like the way Majora’s Mask built up the vignettes within Termina, but the Einherjer vignettes are far more tragic than I ever could’ve imagined. The impression I get from the story is that this is a tragic love story inspired by Norse lore and mythology.
